Program Overview

The program is quite intensive in nature and encompasses two strands of knowledge about the English language: Theory and Practice. The degree program is a blend of linguistics and literature. The courses included exhibit a vast proportion of language and literature throughout the semesters. The courses meet the challenges of the traditional and current trends in language and literature both. They range from fundamental to advanced concepts, so as to enable the students to gain knowledge with systematic progression. This approach will prepare them to orientate themselves towards their interest in English literature and linguistics as two distinctive disciplines, through specialized courses, and, later, dissertation writing. Effective teaching coupled with scholarship and creativity gives the students knowledge and confidence which improves their written and verbal skills, polishes their analytical and rhetorical capabilities, and sharpens their critical thinking. The Department focuses on arranging frequent seminars and talks pertaining to the central concerns of the discipline to foster subject-specific learning in its students. Thus, the range of knowledge and the communication skills that the students gain during the program will prepare them for advanced postgraduate studies and research in the discipline, as well as in a wide variety of professions, including careers in education, research, writing, publishing, media, civil service, and management.
